Built by the wealthy merchants of Jaisalmer, the Havelis of Jaisalmer represents the gorgeous Rajputana architectural skills, artistic visualization and aesthetic beauty. Located on the either side of the lanes of Jaisalmer, the Havelis are best described as a storehouse of brightly coloured and artistically presented miniature paintings, murals and frescoes. A brilliant sample of architectural advancement can be seen in the Jaisalmer Haveli in the form of pillared halls, stone courtyards with water fountains, carved stone screens, exotic stone pavilions, and famous mirror work of Rajasthan. There are many Havelis situated on the surroundings of Jaisalmer city but the Patwon Ki Haveli and the Salim Singh Ki Haveli are the two most elaborate and magnificent Havelis present in the city.
Patwon Ki Haveli
Built in the year 1805 by a merchant called Guman Chand Patwa, the Patwon Ki Haveli is the largest and most elaborate Haveli in Jaisalmer. The Havelis are built in yellow sandstone with a different design on every window and arch. There are extensive corridors and chambers all supported by exquisitely carved pillars.
Salem Singh ki Haveli
Built by the then Prime Minister Salim Singh, a 300 years old architecture stands erect with beautifully arched roof and superbly carved brackets in the form of peacocks. Situated just below the hill, the Haveli also comprises of two wooden storey in order to make it as high as the Maharaja's Palace.
