The Pulau Tenggol islands lie at the south≠ern end of the Terengganu Marine Park. A major feature of the islands is their steep-sided cliffs, which descend into deeper waters than you'll find off most of Penin≠sular Malaysia's east coast. These deeper waters offer good visibility about 30m on average everywhere but because of strong currents this is not the best area for novices. There's an enormous variety of nudibranchs around these islands. Whale sharks are often seen in March/April and September/October. The diving season is from March to September, but when the currents are running make sure you go with an experienced local boatman.
Until recently, you either had to hire a boat and take out all your own equipment, or take a package deal from the Tanjung Jara Beach Hotel, 13krn north of Kuala Dungun, (a few kilometres south of Kuala Terengganu); but now new Tenggol Aqua Resort has opened in Teluk Air Tawar, and another resort is still under construction. These islands are eas≠ily reached from Kuala Dungun, and are very popular at weekends.
